There is something different about an object that has already lived a life.
A worn book with notes tucked between its pages. A silver tray softened by years of polishing. A chair whose arms have been touched by generations of hands. An old painting in an ornate frame that makes you wonder where it once hung and who stopped to admire it before you.
Those are the things that catch our attention.
For us, collecting has never been about filling a room all at once. The most interesting homes seem to happen slowly. They grow over time as you discover pieces that speak to you—sometimes because they are beautiful, sometimes because they are unusual, and sometimes for reasons you can't quite explain.
The Things That Make Us Stop
When we're searching, we rarely begin with a checklist.
We look.
We wander.
And eventually, something makes one of us stop.
It might be the craftsmanship of an old piece of furniture, the patina on a brass object, the shape of an antique mirror, the faded colors of a textile, or something wonderfully peculiar that doesn't fit neatly into any category.
Those are often our favorite discoveries.
We look for character, history, craftsmanship and whimsy—but more than anything, we look for pieces that feel like they still have a story left to tell.
A Mother, a Daughter & the Hunt
Heirlooms & Whimsy grew from something we've enjoyed doing together for years: searching for the unexpected.
Part of the fun is never knowing what we'll find.
There are days when we search through dozens of things without finding the right piece. Then there are days when something catches our eye from across the room and we both know immediately that we've found something special.
And, of course, we don't always agree.
That's part of the fun too.
Our tastes overlap, but they're not identical. One of us may notice the history and craftsmanship of a piece while the other is immediately drawn to something unusual, decorative or just a little strange.
Somewhere between those perspectives is what Heirlooms & Whimsy has become.
Why We Started the Journal
The Curator's Journal is a place for us to share more than what eventually appears in the shop.
We want to take you along on the hunt.
We'll share favorite finds, the stories and history we uncover, decorating ideas, collecting tips, places we explore, pieces we're still trying to understand, and probably a few treasures we couldn't resist keeping for ourselves.
Sometimes we'll know exactly what we've found.
Sometimes we'll have questions.
And sometimes the mystery is what makes a piece interesting in the first place.
The Next Chapter
We believe a home should feel collected rather than decorated.
It should contain pieces that remind you of people, places, travels, memories and moments in your life. New things can certainly become part of that story, but there is something particularly wonderful about giving an older object another chapter.
That's what we hope to do with Heirlooms & Whimsy.
Find remarkable things.
Learn what we can about them.
Share their stories.
And eventually place them in homes where their stories can continue.
Because sometimes the perfect thing for your home isn't something you were looking for at all.
It's simply something you recognize when you find it.
